There is important news for the citizens living on the banks of the Sabarmati river, which is the lifeline of the city, and those passing through it. Following the repair of the gates of Vasna Barrage and the demolition of the superstructure of Subhash Bridge, the process of emptying the Sabarmati river has been started from today i.e. 15th April . These important projects will be completed by reducing the water level in the river for the next three months.
Vasna Barrage: 18 out of 30 gates to be replaced
An inspection conducted by the state government's irrigation department under 'Dam Safety' found that immediate repairs were required to strengthen the barrage.
Duration: April 15 to June 15 (approximately 3 months).
Operation: Out of the total 30 gates, 18 gates will be completely new, while the remaining gates will undergo necessary servicing.
Objective: To ensure the safety of the barrage and increase water storage capacity before the monsoon.
6 structures of Subhash Bridge will be demolished
The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) will reap the biggest benefit of the river being empty. The work of demolishing the old structure of the Subhash Bridge under its redevelopment project will be in full swing during this time.
Why now? Since the debris from the bridge falls into the river, if there is water in the river, it hinders operations.
Plan: The demolition process will be completed in the next two and a half to three months. Once the river is refilled, work on the new bridge structure can continue.
Impact on citizens
The emptying of the Sabarmati River will change the appearance of the riverfront and activities like boating may remain closed for some time. However, this work is essential for the long-term safety and traffic management of the city (bridges).
